Forward


Percussion is one of the oldest forms of human expression. Long before written
language, people used rhythm to communicate, celebrate, mourn, worship, and organize
community life. Over thousands of years, percussion instruments have developed in
every part of the world, resulting in an extraordinary variety of sounds, designs, and
traditions.


This project began as a simple attempt to create a comprehensive list of percussion
instruments. As the research expanded, it became clear that percussion is far too
diverse to be represented by a simple inventory. Instruments evolve, new instruments
are invented, cultures influence one another, and modern technology continues to
reshape the percussion landscape.


The Big List was created as a living reference document for students, educators,
performers, collectors, composers, researchers, and enthusiasts. Its purpose is not to
replace existing scholarly works, but to provide a practical and accessible guide to the
vast world of percussion.


Whether you are discovering percussion for the first time or have spent a lifetime
studying it, this resource is meant to encourage further exploration and appreciation of
the instruments, traditions, and people that make the field so remarkable.

Introduction


What exactly is a percussion instrument? The answer appears simple at first, yet the
boundaries of percussion are often difficult to define. Traditional drums, cymbals, and
keyboard percussion instruments clearly belong within the percussion family. However,
many instruments occupy spaces between traditional classifications.


A piano produces sound through hammers striking strings. A whistle can be used
rhythmically as a percussion effect. Electronic instruments create percussion sounds
without acoustic vibration at all. Modern percussion is therefore much broader than
drums alone.


This encyclopedia attempts to organize that complexity into a practical and
understandable framework.

Summary

 

This encyclopedia includes traditional percussion instruments, world percussion
traditions, contemporary percussion, electronic percussion, hybrid instruments,
educational tools, performance practices, sound effects devices, and additional
resources. It is intentionally broad because percussion itself is broad.

PART II — UNDERSTANDING PERCUSSION

 

Introduction

 

By the time you reach this section, you have already encountered hundreds of
percussion instruments and percussion-related sound sources from around the world.
Some may be familiar. Others may be completely new. Some may seem closely related,
while others appear to have little in common beyond their ability to produce sound.
This raises an important question: what connects all of these instruments?
This section explores the origins of percussion, the role of rhythm in human life, the
systems used to classify instruments, and the ways percussion developed throughout
the world.

 

Origins of Percussion

 

The history of percussion begins long before the invention of formal musical instruments.
The earliest percussion instruments were likely the human body and naturally occurring
objects found in the environment. Hands could clap. Feet could stomp. Stones could be
struck together. Sticks could be hit against trees, logs, or other objects. Long before
humans developed complex societies, rhythm was already part of everyday life.
Every instrument in this encyclopedia represents a chapter in that ongoing story.

 

Why Humans Create Rhythm


Human beings appear to possess a natural relationship with rhythm. People clap along
with music, tap their feet while listening, and coordinate movement through rhythmic
activity.


Rhythm helps organize movement, strengthen social interaction, support memory and
learning, and provide structure for music, dance, ceremony, and community life. In many
ways, rhythm functions as a universal language.

 

Idiophones

​

An idiophone is a percussion instrument that produces sound through the vibration of the
instrument itself. Unlike drums, idiophones do not rely on a stretched membrane. The
material of the instrument vibrates when struck, shaken, scraped, plucked, or rubbed.
Examples include cymbals, triangle, marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel,
claves, cowbell, wood block, agogo bells, castanets, cabasa, guiro, rainstick, bell tree,
handbells, steelpan, kalimba, crotales, and temple blocks.


Idiophones appear in orchestras, percussion ensembles, marching groups, world music
traditions, and popular music. A triangle, steelpan, and marimba may seem unrelated,
yet all belong to the same family because the instrument itself vibrates to create sound.

 

Membranophones

 

Membranophones produce sound through the vibration of a stretched membrane or
drumhead. When struck, rubbed, or otherwise activated, the membrane vibrates and
creates sound.


Examples include snare drum, bass drum, timpani, bongos, congas, djembe, tabla,
talking drum, surdo, taiko, frame drum, bodhran, bata drum, darbuka, doumbek, and
kanjira.


Membranophones are among the most recognizable percussion instruments and are
found in virtually every culture throughout the world.

 

Chordophones

 

Chordophones produce sound through vibrating strings. Although many are not
traditionally classified as percussion instruments, some are played by striking strings
rather than plucking or bowing them.

 

Examples include the piano and hammered dulcimer.

 

These instruments demonstrate that percussion often overlaps with other musical
classifications.

 

Aerophones

 

Aerophones create sound through vibrating air. While most aerophones are associated
with wind instruments, some are frequently used by percussionists for rhythmic and
sound-effect purposes.


Examples include whistles, slide whistles, sirens, and other air-powered sound devices.
Aerophones help demonstrate the broad range of sound-producing devices encountered
in percussion performance.

 

Electrophones

 

Electrophones generate sound electronically. This category has grown rapidly with
advances in technology and now plays a major role in contemporary percussion
performance.


Examples include electronic drum kits, drum machines, trigger pads, electronic cymbals,
MIDI controllers, and synthesized percussion systems.


Electrophones allow performers to create sounds that would be impossible with purely
acoustic instruments.

 

Hybrid Instruments

 

Hybrid instruments combine characteristics from multiple classifications. They may
contain membranes, metal components, electronic elements, or other sound-producing
systems.


Examples include tambourine, hi-hat, and many modern electronic-acoustic percussion
systems.


Hybrid instruments demonstrate that musical instruments do not always fit neatly into a
single category.

 

Pitched Percussion

 

Pitched percussion instruments produce identifiable musical notes and may perform
melodies, harmonies, and chord progressions.


Examples include marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, crotales,
steelpan, and timpani.


These instruments frequently serve both melodic and rhythmic functions.

 

Unpitched Percussion

 

Unpitched percussion instruments do not produce a definite musical pitch and are
primarily used for rhythmic, textural, and coloristic purposes.


Examples include snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, cowbell, wood
block, and many hand percussion instruments.


Unpitched percussion forms the rhythmic foundation of countless musical styles
throughout the world.

 

Percussion Around the World

 

Nearly every culture has developed unique percussion instruments and traditions. Some
instruments remained closely tied to specific regions. Others spread widely through
trade, migration, cultural exchange, and technological development.
African traditions contributed significantly to the development of many modern
percussion practices. Asian cultures developed highly sophisticated systems of tuned
percussion and ceremonial instruments. European traditions influenced orchestral
percussion and military drumming. Indigenous cultures throughout the Americas created
instruments that remain important today.
Together, these traditions form a rich and interconnected history that continues to evolve.

 

The Evolution of Percussion

 

Percussion instruments have never remained static. New materials, technologies,
performance styles, and cultural influences constantly reshape the field. Instruments
once used for communication became concert instruments. Folk instruments entered
professional ensembles. Electronic systems created entirely new possibilities.
The history of percussion is not simply a record of the past. It is an ongoing process of
adaptation, experimentation, and innovation.
Looking Forward


The encyclopedia represents a snapshot of a continually changing field. New
instruments are invented. Existing instruments evolve. Performance practices expand.
Technology creates opportunities that previous generations could not have imagined.
The Big List should not be viewed as a finished project. Instead, it should be understood
as an ongoing archive dedicated to documenting the remarkable diversity of percussion
throughout the world.


The story of percussion is still being written, and every generation contributes a new
chapter.
